Newsflash

SkyJUMP, a java-based GIS system based on the GPL JUMP system from VividSolutions, has published its first public release for Windows. Linux versions are expected to follow shortly. Following the VividSolutions model, SkyJUMP provides an English-only interface and is targeted towards users in local, state, or federal governments who need professional tools that interface with both open and industry standards. SkyJUMP strives to provide ease-of-use that rivals commercial Windows GIS applications.

SkyJUMP 100

I can't believe that this is the 100th version of SkyJUMP!  Of course, most of those versions were internal releases only.  In this vesion, check out the "Past Items Over Selection" smart paste tool.  It can be especially useful, if you are replacing a series of poorly drawn features with a standardized drawing.  It was designed to work with aircraft, but should be useful for all sorts of things.

Download it here

The list of new features is:

Added support for Task Units to Tools->Analysis->  Calculate Areas and Lengths.

Fixed a bug in Task Units that prevented dialogs from getting the current task units and made it necessary for the user to always check the box manually.

Modified Clip to Fence dialog to support a create new layers option.

Modified Warping->Affine Transform to support transforming multiple Layers.

Modified the Buffer Rectangle with Arcs tool to  support the capability to compute earth cover extent given the height (assuming 2:1 slope).

Added the capability to sort Categories by name and by number of features.  It is also possible to save and restore the order of layers.

Added a Search All Attributes option that provides Google-like search capabiliy.  It supports regular expressions.

Added a Combine Selected Layers command that will reverse the effect of Extract Layers by Attribute. Features on Selected layers will be copied to a new layer (Results->Combined) and all attributes will be merged.  The original layer name will be saved as a new Layer attribute and used by colour theming.

Added support for extending selected LineStrings  using the existing Draw LineString tool.  It  can also be used to join multiple selected  LineStrings by drawing a connection between them.

Fixed an InvocationTargetException when a Task file  references a JPG or JGW that doesn't exist.

Fixed an issue with "autosaving" new layers where  they would not save unless the file extension  was explicitly typed in the save dialog.  This  functionality is invoked with Save All and Save Selected Datasets.

Added capability to extract layers by Geometry and by Attribute. Attribute defaults to "Layer" if present to support DXF import, and automatically enables labeling when "Text"  attributes are present.

Added the option to rotate about individual centers and individual first points to the right-click Rotate option.

Added the "Past Items Over Selection" tool that works like a smart paste.  It uses the medial axis algorithm to align the features on the clipboard with the selected features.

The Orthogonalize tool now works with closed linestrings and produces polygons.

Added the Medial Axis option to the Tools->Analysis menu.  It creates arrow-decorated lines along the axis of symmetry of the selected objects.  The medial axis tool considers all features in the selection that intersect as one.

Added error checking to prevent problems after pasting a Style that refers to a missing Attribute.

Added an "External Angles Only" option to the Tools->Edit->"Join With Arc" dialog. This is useful for making rounded corners on road polygons.

Improved the performance and interuptability of the Union function, including the one invoked by the Buffer tool.

Version 96 of SkyJUMP is now available here .  New since version 90:

Added an option to Tools->Analysis Buffer that allows getting the buffer distance from an integer or double numeric attribute.

The enter key can now be used as a substitute for clicking the OK button in most dialogs.

Added an interactive buffer tool that is used to drag out buffer zones around the selected features.  Displays distance in status bar.  Limited to 100 points total for speed reasons.

Fixed the KML writer to support locations in the southern hemisphere.

Added a preliminary KML reader that converts to UTM, but doesn't support multi-geometries or Attributes.

Added support for a repeat count in the Move or Duplicate Along Angle tool.

SkyJUMP 89

Well, it has been a while since the last release. There were several radical new features, and some changes to the render architecture that needed to be thoroughly tested before being released.  The most important new feature is printing support.  I recently tested it by printing an E size sheet on our HP plotter.  It is also great for printing to PDF if you have a PDF printer driver.  Unlike some of the print plugins, the new  print option prints either what you see in the layer view panel or what is in the fence.  It includes optios for optimizing for vector or raster output.
